Benzene Exposure: Acute Myelogenous Leukemia
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML)
sometimes referred to as, acute myeloblastic leukemia, acute myelocytic leukemia,
and acute nonlymphocytic leukemia, is not contracted contagiously or inherited
at birth. While the exact cause of AML is unknown, it is
believed certain environmental factors are linked to AML,
including radiation exposure and benzene exposure. AML can
occur at any age but more often occurs in older adults. AML is the most common
type of adult acute leukemia with more than 10,000 new cases diagnosed annually.
Acute Myelogenous Leukemia Symptoms
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML)
symptoms are a result of a lack of production of healthy blood cells.
In a healthy person bone marrow produces stem cells that turn into
the three types of blood cells: red blood cells, white blood cells
and platelets. In an AML patient the bone marrow makes too
many blast cells (immature white blood cells) which do not turn into
a type of white blood cell called granulocytes as is the process
in a healthy person. At the same time, the marrow is not producing
enough normal red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
AML Treatment
Treatment for AML in adults may
include immunotherapy, chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation.
For leukemia in the central nervous system and pain caused by bone
destruction, a radiation therapy approach is sometimes used.
